We often go out to dinner with two other couples, and every time we see each other, we plan our next getaway. When we had dinner three months ago, we decided on Key West. We have traveled together to San Francisco, Napa Valley, and New York. Now we are planning our next two trips: Cuba and Vegas.
When we decided to drive down to Key West (we all live in South Florida), we opted to rent a house with Airbnb instead of going to a hotel or resort. One of our friends found the best spot and cutest house available for rent!! The home can be rented via Airbnb and VRBO. Below is the entrance of Casa Loca.
This villa is conveniently located two blocks off Duval Street (for those that have never been to Key West, that’s where you want to be) and it was 15 minutes away (walking distance) from the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum as well as the Southernmost Point of the US. We got to visit both in the same morning and still had time to have lunch at the Margaritaville.
Here’s my honest opinion on the house we rented. It was beautiful, conveniently located but parking the car was beyond a hassle. Good news? You only have to do it once. After you park the car, you won’t be needing it until you leave. Everything was within walking distance, and we didn’t drive anywhere until the morning we had to check out.
The house is beautiful, but the pool is not heated. If you go anything after May, you can probably use the pool 24/7, but we went in early April, so the water was not warm until after 6 pm. It was still great to sit on it with our feet on the water, but in the early mornings, it was pretty cold.
The rooms were spacious, but two of them (both upstairs) have slanted ceilings. My husband is 6′ tall, so he bashed his head against the ceiling pretty hard. It was hilarious on my end, not so much to him! He walked towards the end of the room, as if the ceiling was 8′ tall, so he bounced back like a cartoon. Again, only funny for the audience.
The only odd thing that I found about the house is that they have no locks. Make sure you announce to everyone when you go to the bathroom or place a paper sign and flip it when you are using the restroom.
Aside from those little details, the house is beautifully decorated, very coastal, it has enough room for three couples, and again, it’s conveniently located. On the corner of that street, is the cutest coffee shop that has THE best breakfast potatoes I have ever had!! Crispy, small and perfectly seasoned. If you go to Key West, please make sure you eat the breakfast potatoes at the Off the Hook restaurant. They also had an amazing Gourmet Fried Egg sandwich!
Here’s what we did on this trip, and I highly suggest:
- Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum (They only accept cash. Take advantage of the free tours. They have great backstories and anecdotes to share with visitors)
- Southernmost Point of the Continental US
- Duval Street Stroll
- Mallory Square – priceless sunset views, street performers, bars and restaurants
- Sunset Key (we had an incredible dinner at Latitudes)
- Willie T’s – probably the coolest bar in Key West with great live music all day long

This was one of the highlights of the trip! The ferry ride, the view, the sunset, the food, the decor, oh my… If you are planning a trip to Key West, I would highly recommend two things: walk up and down Duval Street as there is so much to do and see, and have dinner at the Latitudes Restaurant. This is a dreamy location if you are planning on celebrating an anniversary, birthday, engagement or honeymoon.
The ride from Mallory Square to the Sunset Key is very short, but if you feel like you are being taken to a secret island. Once you come off the boat, the deck, the palm trees, and the surrounding white sand are unbelievably romantic and tropical.
We had a great table overlooking the water, under a wonderful porch. Once the sun goes down, you will see a lot of sailboats approaching with tourists to take pictures of the sunset. The restaurant will light their torches and you will feel like you are in Hawaii.
I packed really light for Key West. I mainly took summer dresses, shorts, t-shirts, and hats. Below is what it was in my suitcase:
Overall we had a great time with friends and Key West is a wonderful destination to get away for 3-5 days. I personally, do not think there is a lot more to enjoy to stay longer than 5 days, but that’s me 🙂
